Curriculum

Primary learning includes whole-class, group and individual activities designed to develop an inquiring mind and teach basic learning skills needed for schooling and later life.
Literacy and numeracy are the building blocks of learning and that is why English and Mathematics take up half of students' learning time in primary school.

Kindergarten to Year 6 focuses on the following Learning Areas:

English
Mathematics
Science and Technology
History
Geography
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

Creative Arts

Primary school in NSW follows a curriculum based on stages of learning. Each stage is approximately equivalent to two school years. For each learning stage there are skills, knowledge and a level of understanding that each student should develop.

Early Stage 1 refers to Kindergarten
Stage 1 includes Years 1 and 2
Stage 2 includes Years 3 and 4
Stage 3 includes
Years 5 and 6

All Activities are developed from NSW Department of Education and NSW Board of Studies Curriculum.  Detailed information can be obtained from the Board of Studies Website www.bosnsw-k6.nsw.edu.au

Reading to your child at home
Kindergarten is a wonderful time when children begin to build on what they have learnt at home. Our main aim is to make your child’s first contact with school a happy and enjoyable experience, which will help establish a positive attitude to learning. We aim to encourage the development of your child’s confidence, concentration, social skills, and oral language skills to foster their imagination and creativity and help build their self-esteem.

The kindergarten teachers take into account the many different experiences and backgrounds of all the children in the class to make sure the learning program benefits every child.

Purposeful play is a powerful medium for learning. Children need opportunities to choose from a wide variety of activities, materials and equipment that will stimulate, challenge and involve them in interesting tasks. We recognise the importance of play when implementing learning experiences for the children in our class. These learning experiences are developmentally appropriate for the children, incorporating individual needs and interests.

Children learn social skills by playing with other children and sharing equipment. Play allows your child to share and take turns while developing coordination and confidence. Your child will have many new experiences and learn many new skills.
Socially we aim to teach the child:
To play co-operatively with others, share and respect other people’s ideas, feelings and property
To accept change
•To follow instructions and expectations
•To accept being one of the group, to work well in a group and share the teacher’s attention
•To listen and communicate with others, and above all,
to enable the child to gain self control, build self confidence and become independent

Kindergarten provides opportunities for students to develop strength, proficiency, coordination and control over large (gross motor) and small (fine motor) movements.
Fine Motor Skills we aim to teach:•Tracing letters and patterns
•Correct pencil grip
•Cutting and pasting
•Painting

•Threading/ moulding materials

Some children are ready to read and write when they begin school, others learn these skills throughout the year. Activities are designed to attend to all children’s needs.Your child will develop knowledge, skills and understanding about English language and literature. They will be encouraged to talk, listen, read, view and write with purpose, effect and confidence. Many of the art, craft and music activities get children ready for reading and writing. They help children to control their hand and eye movements and to look and listen carefully.

The children are involved in a variety of activities that include weighing and measuring, recognising and comparing shapes and sizes, grouping and labelling, pattern and problem solving, counting, recognising and writing numbers.

Stage one

Your child begins Year 1 with familiar faces and school routines.
Year 1 is the start of Learning Stage 1 and will continue until the end of Year 2. This year students become more involved in school routines and continue to develop their social skills as they interact with other children in the classroom and playground.

Letting your child know that you are interested in what they're learning, and helping them with their homework will benefit their education.
Here are useful links with tips on how you can help your Year 2 child with their early literacy and numeracy skills.

Stage two

Your child has taken the significant step from infants to primary school and into the first year of Learning Stage 2.

National Test:
This is the first year your child sits for the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test held in May. There are four tests covering numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

You will receive a report of your child's achievement in the tests. The results tell you how your child is progressing in these areas and can guide the learning support you give your child at home.

Stage three

Your child has progressed to Learning Stage 3, the final stage of primary school.
National Test:
All Year 5 students sit for the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test in May. It involves four tests that cover numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar. See NAPLAN - literacy and numeracy (also in community languages).

The results of the NAPLAN test help teachers meet the individual literacy and numeracy needs of students. You will receive a report of your child's achievement in the NAPLAN test. The results tell you how your child is progressing in these areas and can guide the learning support you give your child at home.

Students wishing to be considered for enrolment in a selective high school will need to complete an application this year. Application packages are available in October and the entry exam is taken when your child is in Year 6. See selective high school placement test.

The end of primary school and into high school the needs of young adolescents in the middle years (aged 10 - 15) are integrated into our teaching.

Year 6 is the final year of primary school and an exciting time as students can take a leadership role in our school. We work together with high schools to assist our Year 6 students to have a successful start to high school.
