Good films are a direct result of good ideas, good planning and good preparation. Student filmmaking projects require careful planning and organisation to ensure everyone gets the most out of it.
Our contemporary and innovative 'Tech Hub' offers a space for educators and students to experiment with new technologies and teaching programs that cater to the Australian Digital Technologies Curriculum. The 'Tech Hub' centres around film-making, Lego Robotics and coding programs accessible to all students Kindergarten to Year 6.
Building on the previous success of our whole school digital literacy/ film-making program 'Seahorse Cinema' and K-6 coding programs, we aim to continue to provide a high quality teaching environment where students have access to facilities that allow for hands on learning experiences.
We implement Lego Robotics and STEM programs centered around computational thinking skills, providing students with the opportunities to engage in genuine mathematical activity to develop their skills to become flexible and creative users of mathematics.
Leaders in Visual, digital and multimodal texts
The NSW English syllabus outlines the importance of understanding and constructing visual, digital and multimodal texts. Filmmaking and film studies are an integral part of a student's education. Through the study and creation of film students at Cronulla South PS get a sense of the complexities involved with this form of media, and therefore a deeper understanding. Studying and creating films also encourages problem solving, critical and creative thinking as well as collaboration and cooperation.
Since 2013, the students of Cronulla South PS have been studying filmmaking through the creation of class movies which premier in Term 2 as part of our whole school film night ‘Seahorse Cinemas’. The evening showcases the wonderful digital story making activities that all classes participate in.
Following on from the success of Seahorse Cinemas, class films are submitted into ‘Film By The Sea’, which is a NSW Department of Education project that is prepared and presented by primary school students from around NSW. Since 2013, Cronulla South PS have successfully entered over 10 films into the film competition.
At Cronulla South PS we are recognised for our excellence in the area of digital, multimodal and visual literacy.
The achievements of our amazing students and staff include:
Cronulla South Public School continues to be a leader in technology, not only through infrastructure and resources, but also in staff knowledge and leadership in the area of technology in education. The use of technology is now embedded into regular teaching and classroom practices in all learning areas.
Cronulla South has a focus on mobile technology with over 100 iPads and 100 laptops school wide. Technology continues to be valued and used extensively by all staff in their classrooms in supporting 21st Century teaching and learning programs. There is a focus on the responsible and respectful use of technology through the school's digital citizenship programs and students are exposed to creative mathematical and literacy skills in the areas of K-6 coding programs, filmmaking, website design and online collaboration tools through Google Apps.
